Nancy: Artist Aided by the Lighthouse to Be Able to Participate in More Social Events, Create and Communicate with Others

Nancy is a talented artist who lived on her own until recently. Due to vision loss, she found herself unable to draw. Feeling frustrated and isolated, Nancy decided to move into an assisted living facility. Even at the facility, Nancy struggled to participate in group crafts, read her mail, read the activities calendar, and use her smart phone to connect with friends and family. When Nancy suffered a fall, the facility nurse called the Lighthouse.

A Lighthouse low vision occupational therapist assessed Nancy's needs, provided magnification devices (pictured), performed a lighting assessment, set up lighting in Nancy's room to minimize risk of falls, and taught Nancy techniques to make best use of her remaining vision.

Because of the Lighthouse, Nancy regained the ability to do her art, read her mail, and participate in group crafts. She learned how to use her Smartphone to dictate messages and listen to texts, and she has completed a long-deferred quilting project. Said Nancy, "I am so happy with the Lighthouse. I can't thank them enough!"
