Ken's Story: Gaining Tools, Training and Independence
Lighthouse services are often combined with other services offered in the community. For Kevin, Lighthouse assistive technology services filled a critical gap beyond what Kevin’s group home and medical services could provide.
Kevin is a young adult with some health challenges and low vision. These challenges make it difficult for him to leave home, yet he has needed to attend court hearings regarding his son, and he often has medical appointments.
Simple but specialized technology solutions are now helping Kevin. Lighthouse professionals got him set up with a tablet, and they showed him how to use telehealth. He now uses a large print key board and the seeing AI app. This app uses the device camera to identify people and objects, and then the app audibly describes those objects. The app can also scan bar codes, or read short pieces of text.
Kevin is now attending doctor, therapy, and court appointments remotely. He can read his mail with the help of the seeing AI app.
Kevin is also now connecting with friends on Facetime. He plans to use the iPad to fill out job applications and potentially do virtual interviews for jobs he can do remotely.
Kevin is very grateful for Lighthouse services, so he is willing to share his story.
