Amanda's Story: Creating Life of Hope and Purpose

Amanda Paszak's life took a dramatic turn when she woke up completely blind on December 19th, 2020, after being diagnosed with Progressive Uveitis in 2001. Her successful career in healthcare billing and claims processing came to a halt. She struggled with sadness, anger, fear, and depression, unsure of how to move forward. For almost two years, Amanda sat in her recliner, afraid to do anything, while her family rallied around her and took care of her needs.

In October 2022, Amanda found the catalyst to change when she advocated for her daughter's high school drama club by emailing the school board. This experience made her realize that she wanted to be a role model for her children and that her life wasn't over, despite losing her vision. She reached out to the Lighthouse Center for Vital Living and Minnesota State Services for the Blind for assistance.

Amanda began part-time Adjustment to Blindness (ATB) training in April 2023 and became a full-time student in June. She quickly mastered the braille code, though learning to walk with a white cane was initially challenging. Amanda's Orientation and Mobility instructor pushed her to become comfortable navigating independently. Amanda also learned essential technology skills and cooking techniques.

Amanda's self-confidence grew, and she found a new sense of determination and purpose. She decided to pursue a job for herself at the Lighthouse, utilizing her skills in billing and account management. She began working as an Administrative Assistant at the Lighthouse on April 29, 2024, just a year after starting her ATB training.

“I decided that my life wasn’t over. Even though I could no longer see, I still have a long life ahead of me.” -Amanda, former student, now a Lighthouse staff member

Amanda's story of transition from despair to hope serves as an inspiration to others. She has become the role model she hoped to be!
