What Past Interns Have to Say

Kat: O&M

Through the experience I gained at the Lighthouse, I developed a much deeper understanding of the field of orientation and mobility, and was able to improve and refine my ability to effectively guide and support individuals in their journey toward greater independence. During my internship I interacted with multiple instructors, which showed me a variety of teaching styles. I also learned how to tailor my lessons to accommodate a large variety of students of different ages, ability, and with varying degrees of acceptance of their visual impairment/blindness.

I started my journey at the Lighthouse in January and was very thankful I brought dry, warm layers to work with students in a variety of elements, including extreme cold. What great real-life experience for everyone!

Tani: O&M and VRT

The knowledge I gained and the experiences I had during my O&M and VRT internships at the Lighthouse Center for Vital Living prepared me well for a career in the vision field. The experience helped build both my professional skills and confidence.

Throughout my time at the Lighthouse I had the opportunity to work with people of different ages and with varying degrees of vision loss. I enjoyed teaching in the center-based program as well as visiting clients in their homes because each setting offered unique learning moments and meaningful connections.

What stood out to me most about the Lighthouse is their person-centered approach. Clients only receive the services they need and are not required to follow a rigid curriculum. The program meets each individual where they are in their journey, which I believe is essential for effective training. Clients have access to a wide range of services including Orientation & Mobility, Assistive Technology, Braille, Tasks of Daily Living, Pre-Employment training, Adaptive Leisure, and group discussions on various topics.

I’m incredibly grateful for the generosity of the Lighthouse, especially in providing free housing for interns. It’s clear that they value their interns and want to set them up for success.

Lastly, I’m thankful for both the guidance I received throughout my internship and the opportunities I had to independently plan and implement lessons. As an intern, I was fully respected and integrated into the professional team. I wholeheartedly agree with the Lighthouse’s mission to “empower those we serve to lead confident, independent, and fulfilling lives.” It was an honor to be part of an organization that lives out its values every day.
