Intern at the Lighthouse in Duluth, Minnesota!
An internship at the Lighthouse Center for Vital Living is an outstanding opportunity for university students to become Orientation and Mobility Specialists (O&M) and Vision Rehabilitation Therapists (VRT). The Lighthouse hosts interns during the Spring, Summer, and Fall semesters and is flexible with start and end dates.
Housing or a stipend are offered to interns. Lighthouse vehicles or a driver are provided for Lighthouse related work.
The Lighthouse provides interns a diverse work experience including but not limited to the following:
- Work with center-based students daily. This typically includes working with 5 to 10 adults in training.
- Work with local school districts, providing direct and indirect O&M services to around 15 school-age students.
- Serving clients in the community on an itinerant basis.
- Work with the Lighthouse Transition Program cohort of 10-20 students ages 14-22. Students participate in weekly remote sessions as well as 5 training weekends throughout the school year. During the Summer there are two week-long camps that students participate in as well.
- Public presentations, support groups, community activities, and in-services.
- The Lighthouse also provides Assistive Technology and Occupational Therapy services, which allows for inter-disciplinary work.
The Lighthouse staff is diverse and well-credentialed. There are three Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists, two Vision Rehabilitation Therapists, and two Assistive Technology Specialists. The Lighthouse often contracts with other COMS and CVRT’s for the transition program school year and summer programming, which gives the intern the opportunity to shadow and work alongside multiple other professionals in the field. There are also many other amazing staff at the Lighthouse including three Occupational Therapists and a certified Assistive Technology Professional (ATP)
